In 2025, Konpira Consulting will be organizing two events to help cruisers experience the wonders of Japan’s oceans.

  • The Japan Yacht Rally (JYR), to take cruisers from the south to the north of Japan, positioning them to continue on to Alaska.
  • The Setouchi Yacht Rally (SYR), to bring Japanese and foreign cruisers together to explore the beautiful Seto Inland Sea.

The two rallies highlight the fact that Japan is one of the world’s great cruising destinations. With its friendly people, fascinating history and culture, beautiful scenery, and delicious cuisine—and without the crowding and safety issues that plague many otherwise-wonderful destinations—Japan is a uniquely delightful place to cruise.

We look forward to welcoming cruisers from Japan and around the world to one or both of the rallies.

Japan Yacht Rally

The inaugural Japan Yacht Rally (JYR) was held in 2024 with four participating boats (three American, one New Zealand). Based on positive feedback from the participants and from the local communities where the Rally visited, the JYR will be held again in 2025.

The JYR is planned especially to help cruisers safely make the most of their relatively short time in Japan while heading to Alaska and/or other North America destinations. For cruisers who want to stay in the country longer, the JYR will help them get familiar with the unique aspects of cruising Japan so that they are more comfortable cruising on their own after the Rally.

2025 Schedule

The schedule of the 2025 Japan Yacht Rally will be as follows.

  • Yonabaru Marina, Okinawa, March 14 to 16
  • Iki Island, Nagasaki, April 18 to 20
  • Otaru Port Marina, Hokkaido, May 30 to June 1

Rally Overview

Between these three rendezvous points, participating boats will be free to cruise at their own pace, using moorage information and ongoing advice/support from the Rally organizer.

The route will allow participating boats to island hop from Okinawa to Kyushu and then go up the Sea of Japan to Hokkaido, positioning them to head to Alaska in the first two weeks of June.

Those who do not want to go to Alaska in 2025, however, could head back south via Japan’s Pacific coast and leave their boats over the winter in western Japan. They could then continue cruising Japan in 2026, including perhaps joining the Setouchi Yacht Rally.

The 2025 Japan Yacht Rally will have a minimum of five and a maximum of eight boats.

Setouchi Yacht Rally

With an 11-year history, the Setouchi Yacht Rally brings together Japanese and foreign cruisers to leisurely explore the beautiful Seto Inland Sea. In 2024, the Japan Yacht Rally and the Setouchi Yacht Rally rendezvoused at Iki Island, Nagasaki, to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the Ocean Cruising Club.

Konpira Consulting is proud to have been asked by the Japan Ocean Cruising Club to assume the operation of the Setouchi Yacht Rally from 2025. We look forward to continuing its tradition of fostering friendships among domestic and international cruisers and of contributing to each of the local communities where the Rally stops.

Rally Details

The 2025 Setouchi Yacht Rally will have a minimum of five and a maximum of eight boats.

The tentative dates for the 2025 Setouchi Yacht Rally are May 9 to May 26. Details about the schedule, activities, and participation fee will be announced as soon as possible.

Doing Both Rallies

Participants in the Japan Yacht Rally have the option of splitting off from the group at Iki island and joining the Setouchi Yacht Rally. After the Setouchi Yacht Rally, they could quickly leave from central Honshu to go to the North America mainland or head up the Pacific Coast to Hokkaido and Alaska. Or, they could continue to enjoy more sailing in Japan in 2025, leaving their boat in Japan over the winter and then rejoining the Japan Yacht Rally at Iki Island in 2026 and continuing on to Hokkaido.
